Designed to fit perfectly with your university aviation degree course, uMAP takes you from PPL to fATPL, perfectly complementing your existing studies. We work alongside your university to deliver the commercial flight training elements of your degree. It’s simple.

You can enrol on our uMAP course with any university, provided you are on a relevant degree programme (e.g. Air Transport/Aviation Management with pilot studies). Currently we partner with Buckinghamshire New University (BNU).

Course Entry Requirements

Requirements to join us on this course are, as a minimum:

  • Aged 18 or over at the start of training (no upper age limit!)
  • A current UK issued passport or UK Settled Status (indefinite right to remain)
  • For Dual Licence you will need an EASA Class 1 (assigned to Danish authority) and UK CAA medical certificate. For single EASA or UK licensing path will only need to obtain the Class 1 medical for your chosen path (see FAQs).
  • Enrolled on a degree in Commercial Aviation + Pilot Studies
  • Valid PPL (A)
  • Complete our Modular application form

Course breakdown

Your tailored route to becoming a pilot.

Submit your University Modular Application Form

To enrol, you’ll need to submit a Leading Edge Modular application. This process assesses your potential for success and ensures we select the best pilots for the airlines.

Modular Application components:

  • An application form with situational judgement questions.

Academic Study at University (Year One)

Approx. 30 training weeks, Your Chosen University


Your first year is spent completing academic study at your university of choice. During this time, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of aviation and flying and work towards obtaining your PPL (A).

You will complete:

  • 13 PPL Ground School Subjects
  • PPL Ground Exams
  • Minimum of 45 PPL flying hours

ATPL Ground School + Hour Building (Year Two)

Approx. 33 training weeks, Alhama Campus


Building on your PPL theory, you’ll join Leading Edge Aviation to develop the knowledge and understanding required for the Airline Transport Pilot Licence.

As with our Integrated courses, you will be studying the most up-to-date academic syllabus, and will also study KSA100 (Knowledge, Skills & Attitude). This helps to develop the soft skills that are a critical part of your future career. This important element of the course will be continuously assessed throughout your training.

Alongside ATPL ground school, you will complete the remainder of your hour building with us. This will take you to our minimum requirement of 174 hours (including a night rating and 100 hours pic) to begin working towards your Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL).

  • 13 (or 26 for dual licence) Qualifying exams

Academic Study at University (Year Three)

Approx. 30 training weeks, Your University


For your third year of the course, you return to your chosen university to complete your degree course. For a more detailed breakdown of the academic requirements of this phase of training please consult your chosen university.

Advanced Flight Training (Year Four)

Approx. 23 training weeks, Oxford Campus


Finally it’s back to Leading Edge for your fourth and final year. In this phase of the course you complete the remainder of your ATPL flight training.

Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL)

You will start your advanced flight training by working towards your commercial pilot’s licence on our fleet of multi-engine Aircraft.

  • 31 training hours plus Commercial Pilot Licence Skills Test
  • Aircraft type: DA42
  • Includes MEP (Multi Engine Piston) Class Rating

Multi Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR)

Your airline preparation continues with the MEIR. You’ll train in our AL42 simulators and our twin-engine aircraft, to learn how to fly in instrument and all weather conditions.

  • Aircraft: AL42 simulator & DA42
  • Training hours: 51.3 (may be reduced, depending on experience) plus Instrument Rating Skills Test
  • Total aircraft time: 20.8 hours
  • Total sim time: 30.5 hours

Advanced Upset Prevention Recovery Training (AUPRT)

Using a combination of theory and flight training, you’ll learn how to apply the correct recovery techniques if you encounter upsets in flight at any time in your aviation career.

  • 5 Training hours
  • Aircraft:Slingsby Firefly (AUPRT)

Airline Pilot Standard Multi-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC)

The ultimate phase of the course is the Airline Pilot Standards Multi-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC) Course. It’s conducted in our state-of-the-art MPS Airbus A320 FTD-1 Simulator which has a full Airbus data pack and multiple HD airports. It will be your first taste of flying as an airline pilot in a multi crew environment.

  • 25 hours (minimum) Theoretical Knowledge Instruction, including Airline Oriented Training
  • 20 hours of briefing and de-briefing before and after simulator training sessions
  • 40 hours of type-specific flight simulator training, with a final assessment
  • Online access to all training materials and manuals

Graduate Employment Services (Optional extra)

3-Day Course & Ongoing Support, Oxford Campus


Our comprehensive Graduate Employment Services is an optional extra for all University Modular students. The course is designed to prepare and support you in landing that all important First Officer role.

The course is taught by a team who have a wealth of experience in pilot recruitment and held at our academy in Oxford. Our instructors will walk you through the assessment process, tailoring the workshop to your experience and ensuring you are ready for your first airline interview.
