How to Apply

Starting Your Pilot Training Journey

Once you’ve decided on a career as a commercial pilot, the next step is understanding how to get there. Your journey to the flight deck begins well before your pilot training even starts, and there are several important steps you can take to prepare and stay organised along the way.

Read on to discover how to apply for a pilot training course and ensure you’re fully prepared before your training begins.

    Preparing for Take Off

The key steps to take before starting your pilot training.

    Research and Discovery

Aviation careers events such as Pilot Expo and Pilot Careers Live are a valuable starting point, allowing you to explore pilot training options. Bring a trusted friend or relative along, ask questions face to face, and gain a clearer understanding of the pathways available to you.

As you move from research into discovery, attending a flight school Open Day is one of the most effective ways to determine whether a training environment is right for you. At Leading Edge Aviation, we host regular Open Days at our Oxford campus, giving you the opportunity to experience our facilities, meet our instructors and students, and see how we prepare pilots for airline careers.

Deciding the Right Training Journey for you

    Choose a Training Provider

Deciding on the right training provider is a crucial step towards the flight deck. At Leading Edge Aviation, we offer UK CAA and EASA approved, airline-focused training designed to prepare you for a professional pilot career from day one.

    Select a Training Pathway

We offer three pathways to professional qualification; Integrated, Modular and University Modular. Each pathway is designed to suit different backgrounds, timelines, and learning styles. Understanding which option is right for you is key to starting your training with confidence. Find out which training pathway best suits you.

    Single or Dual Licence?

Choosing the right pilot licence is a key part of planning your training journey. Whether you opt for a UK CAA licence, an EASA licence, or a Dual licence will influence where you can train, the aircraft you can operate, and the career opportunities available to you. Taking the First Step

    Integrated Pilot Training

If you’d like to enrol on one of our Integrated LEAP courses, you’ll need to pass our industry-aligned, comprehensive Skills Assessment.  This will consist of an online aptitude test, interview and group assessment. Our skills assessments are currently £150 to book on our website which will be credited toward your course deposit if you are successful.

Modular and University Modular Pilot Training

To enrol, you’ll need to submit a Leading Edge Aviation Modular application. This will consist of an application form with situational judgement questions and a ground and flight assessment if you are a Modular Flight Training student. Get in touch with our Training Advisors to start the Modular application process.

    Final Preparations Before You Start

As soon as you successfully pass our assessment or application process, you will need to choose a start date, obtain your Class 1 Medical and apply for student finance, if applicable.

    Obtain a Class 1 Medical

You will need to have your Class 1 Medical in place at least three months prior to your chosen course start date. If you choose to pursue a Dual licence, you will need to hold two Class 1 Medical Certificates; one issued by the UK CAA and one issued under EASA.

    Apply for Student Finance

You can start your student finance application up to a month prior to your course start date. Details of how you can do this will be provided by our Customer Experience team beforehand.

    FAQ’s

I am still in school. What can I do to prepare for pilot training?
There are many things that you can do at this stage to prepare, for example: Studying the Right Subjects:  Focus on the essential subjects. As a minimum you’ll need 5 GCSEs, including English, Maths and Science, preferably Physics. This academic foundation is crucial for your future training. Experience a Trial Flight: We highly recommend experiencing flying firsthand. Arrange a trial flight in a light aircraft, such as a Diamond DA40 (which you’ll train in during your course), or a similar model like a Cessna 152/172 or Piper PA-28. This experience is invaluable in confirming your passion for flying. Read our Preparation Guide
What is the minimum/ maximum age to train?

You need to be at least 17 to apply, but 18 before your course start date. There’s no upper age limit to train with us if you can hold an unrestricted UK CAA Class 1 Medical.

Do I need a Class 1 Medical in place before I sit my Leading Edge skills assessment?

You do not need to have a Class 1 Medical in place before you sit your skills assessment, however do keep in mind your intended course start date. If your intended course start date falls within three months of your skills assessment, we would recommend that you have your Class 1 Medical in place beforehand to avoid disappointment.

    Do you provide PPL training?

Whilst our Integrated LEAP Course takes you from no experience to fATPL, our Modular course requires a PPL to start. Unfortunately, we do not offer PPL training, however there are plenty of reputable academies that do.

    What Qualifications do I need?

5 x GCSEs (including English, Maths & Science, preferably Physics!) level 4/C and above.

Do I need any prior flying experience?

If you choose either of our Integrated training pathways, you don’t need any prior flying experience although we recommend a trial flight to make sure that this is the career pathway for you.

If you opt for Modular or University Modular, you will need to complete a PPL before you start with us.

Do I need to have settled status in the UK to train with you?

To complete your training based at our Oxford campus, you will need settled status and the right to live and work in the UK. This includes our Integrated UK course and both Modular pathways. You can still opt to complete a dual licence.

If you would like to pursue our Integrated EU course, you will only need the right to live and work in Europe. You can still opt to complete a dual licence.

Should I Visit Leading Edge Aviation before I apply?

You do not need to visit us before applying, however we would strongly recommend it, to make sure we are the right fit for you.

We regularly hold Open days at our Oxford campus, giving you the opportunity to explore our facilities and fleet. Secure your place at an Open day.

If you are unable to attend an Open day, but would still like to visit us, we are happy to arrange a 1-1 tour with you at a time that suits you. Please be aware that you may not be able to have a go in our simulators or tour our aircraft, as we cannot guarantee their availability.
