Area 100 KSA (Knowledge, Skills and Attitude)

Supported by Boeing’s CBTA Learning Library

Developing resilient and capable pilots through structured, competency-based training.

Reimagining Area 100 KSA in Commercial Pilot Training

Success in aviation isn’t just about understanding aircraft systems, it’s about developing critical thinking, teamwork, and resilience. Enter Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude (KSA) training, a dynamic, competency-based approach that’s now a regulatory requirement in the ATPL syllabus and is improving how future pilots prepare.

At Leading Edge Aviation, KSA training is integrated into every ground school pathway. Our programme goes beyond theory, offering immersive activities designed to strengthen both technical and soft skills. Students engage in:

  • Scenario-based team exercises
  • Flight planning challenges (including IFR routes)
  • Paired presentations and leadership tasks
  • Hands-on experiences like operating the A320 simulator and flying the DA40
  • Mental maths drills and knowledge tests

Collaborating with Boeing to Develop a Comprehensive Learning Experience

Leading Edge Aviation is the sole UK-based ATO selected to support Boeing in the development of its Area 100 KSA training resources. This collaboration places Leading Edge at the forefront of competency-based pilot training and reflects our commitment to developing pilots who are ready for modern airline operations.

Built with direct input from our instructors, students and leadership team, the training materials strengthen how Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes are taught and measured from the very start of training. Area 100 KSA is now fully embedded within our Whole Pilot® approach, ensuring non-technical skills are developed alongside technical competencies.

“Our collaboration with ATO partners demonstrates our commitment to developing the next generation of pilots. The CBTA Learning Library provides instructors and student pilots with the tools needed to deliver consistent, high-quality competency-based training.”

Using Real Life Scenarios to Reflect Real Airline Operations

Boeing’s Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) Learning Library provides instructors with a structured framework for delivering scenario-based learning and assessment aligned with EASA and CAA expectations. The content focuses on key non-technical competencies, including communication, workload management, decision making, leadership, and threat and error management, all central to Area 100 requirements.

The result is a training experience that better reflects airline operations and prepares students for multi-crew environments from the earliest stages of their course.
