5 Exciting Things to Do in and around Oxford, UK

Considering carrying out your pilot training at our Oxford Campus? As one of the most famous student cities in the world, Oxford offers a rich blend of culture, history, green spaces and unique activities, perfect for when you’re not flying. Here’s our round-up of the top five things to do in and around Oxford during your downtime.

1 – Tour of the Oxford University Grounds

Oxford is home to the oldest English-speaking university in the world, and its stunning architecture is as iconic as it is inspiring. Whether you’re wandering through the picturesque courtyards of Christ Church College (also a filming location for Harry Potter) or strolling the cobbled streets past Radcliffe Camera, this city feels like a living museum.

Book a guided tour to get insider knowledge on the University’s rich history, or simply grab a coffee and take a self-guided walk around town, soaking in the academic atmosphere and admiring some of the world’s most breathtaking college buildings.

2 – Take a Punting Trip along the Cherwell River

A must-do Oxford classic. Punting is a relaxing and scenic way to see the city from a different angle. Head to Magdalen Bridge Boathouse or Folly Bridge where you can hire a punt, rowboat, or even a pedalo and row through lush greenery along the River Cherwell.

Whether you opt to steer it yourself or have a professional guide do the hard work, punting is the perfect sunny-day activity for students wanting to switch off and enjoy nature without leaving the city.

3 – Go Plane Spotting in Brize Norton

Just under an hour’s drive from the centre of Oxford, RAF Brize Norton is the largest Royal Air Force station in the UK and a must-visit for any aviation fanatic. The base is home to a fleet of impressive military aircraft, including the Airbus A400M Atlas, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, and the Airbus A330 MRTT (Voyager), supporting air transport, air-to-air refuelling, and military parachuting operations.

While it’s primarily an RAF base, you might be lucky enough to spot a special visitor, often from international air forces. Though it’s not quite Heathrow, the action here is frequent and fascinating, making it a great spot to capture some unique aircraft photos and see the RAF in action up close.

4 – Attend an Oxford Market or Oxford Carnival

Oxford is not only famous for its academic heritage but also for its vibrant local events and market culture. Whether you’re looking for fresh produce, quirky gifts, or a taste of local traditions, there’s always something going on. Here are some must-visit spots and celebrations to soak up the atmosphere:

Oxford Covered Market

Located in the heart of the city, the Oxford Covered Market is a historic indoor space filled with independent traders, artisan coffee shops, bakeries, florists, and craft stalls. Dating back to the 1770s, it’s a great place to wander, grab a bite, and shop for something uniquely Oxford.

Cowley Carnival

One of Oxford’s most vibrant annual events, the Cowley Road Carnival brings colour, music, and energy to the city each summer. Expect live performances, street food, bold costumes, and a buzzing community vibe. It’s the perfect day out to experience Oxford’s diverse and inclusive spirit. Whilst not taking place in 2025, the carnival is set to make a reappearance in the summer of 2026.

Gloucester Green Outdoor Market

Held several times a week, the Gloucester Green Market is a lively outdoor market just steps from the main bus and train stations. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you’ll find vintage clothing, vinyl records, global cuisine, and artisan crafts. On Thursdays, it’s all about local farmers’ produce, perfect for picking up fresh, seasonal treats.

May Day Festival

May Day in Oxford is a truly unique tradition. Thousands gather in the early hours (yes, really!) of the 1st May to hear the Magdalen College Choir sing from the tower at sunrise, a practice dating back over 500 years. The event continues with folk dancing in the streets, Morris dancers, and festivities all around the city. With local pubs open from 5am, May Day is a quirky and memorable experience you won’t forget.

Oxford Foodie Festival

Set to take place between 23rd – 25th August, the Oxford Foodie Festival should be at the top of your list if you are a foodie! Expect an array of artisan market stalls, live cooking demos and lots of samples and tastings.

5 – Explore the Grounds of Blenheim Palace

Just a stone’s throw from our Oxford campus, Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Winston Churchill. Its grand Baroque architecture, sprawling gardens and rich history make it a great day out.

Take a tour of the palace itself or enjoy one of its seasonal events; from outdoor cinema nights to winter light trails. It’s the perfect weekend escape for those looking to unwind and be inspired by a little British grandeur.
