Congratulations on completing your GCSEs! If you’re thinking about a career as a commercial pilot, now is the perfect time to start planning your journey. The aviation industry is booming, offering exciting opportunities and unbelievable experiences for those ready to take to the skies. Here’s everything you need to know to get your engines started.

Why Choose a Career as a Commercial Pilot?

Becoming a commercial pilot is an amazing path with lots of opportunities at hand, especially as this industry is rapidly growing and pilots are in high demand. Imagine a career where you can earn a great salary, travel the world, and have a flexible schedule. It’s a job that’s not only challenging but also rewarding, as it allows you to be part of a close-knit community of professionals who share your bright passion for flying. If you’re 16 and dreaming of your future, a career as a pilot could be the adventure you’re looking for!

How to Get Started

To start training as a pilot, you need to be over 18 with 5 GCSEs at a Grade 4 and above, including Maths, English, and a Science. You will also need a Class 1 Medical Certificate and to pass a Skills Assessment, which you can take from age 17 onwards. Here is our guide on how to start preparing for a career in the skies:

1. Chart Your A-Level Courses

Your next step should be selecting the right A-Levels. Prioritise subjects like Physics, Mathematics, and Geography, these will provide a solid foundation for the technical knowledge you’ll need in flight training and beyond.

2. Boost Your Extra-Curricular Portfolio

Joining clubs and societies, especially those related to aviation, STEM or leadership. Participating in activities like the Duke of Edinburgh Award, sports teams, or debating societies can help you develop essential skills such as teamwork and problem-solving to demonstrate that you’re well-rounded and thrive in high pressure environments ready for the future.

 3. Gain Ground Experience: Volunteer at Local Airports

Consider immersing yourself in the aviation environment by volunteering at local airports during weekends or school holidays to have hands-on experiences that will give you a glimpse into the industry and give your CV a competitive edge.

4. Stay in the Loop with Aviation News

Subscribe to aviation publications like ‘Pilot’, ‘FLYER’ or ‘Airliner World’, as well as relevant social media accounts to stay informed about industry trends. This knowledge will deepen your understanding and help you prepare for the Skills Assessment.

 5. Explore the Virtual Skies with Flight Simulators

Try a flight simulator experience! It’s an affordable way to get a feel for flying, helping you understand basic flight controls and boosting your confidence.

6.Embrace Physical and Mental Fitness

A career in aviation requires physical and mental stamina. Start a regular fitness routine and incorporate mindfulness exercises to prepare yourself for the challenges ahead.

7. Visit Training Schools

Get a first look at your future training environment by visiting flight schools. Attend open days at places like Leading Edge Aviation to explore your options and choose the best path for your career.

 8. Start Pilot Networking

Reach out to current commercial pilots to learn from their experiences. Their advice and potential mentorship can provide invaluable insights about training, lifestyle, and career paths as you prepare for your own career.

 9. Polish Your Communication Skills

Strong communication is critical in aviation. Work on enhancing both your verbal and written communication skills, as they are key to success in the cockpit. Clear communication helps you become a better team member and a safer pilot.

 10. Gear Up for the Skills Assessment at 17

Once you turn 17, you can take the skills assessment, a crucial step toward entering flight training. Start preparing early to showcase your aptitude and enthusiasm for becoming a pilot.
