Our first uMAP courses settle in to life in the academy

Waiting for the weather to improve
Published on November 30, 2021
September & October were very exciting months at Leading Edge Aviation as we welcomed the first two uMAP courses into the academy! uMAP (University Modular Airline Preparation) is our very own course that integrates with your university degree. The uMAP course enables students to complete their flight training in a Modular fashion but with an Integrated feel as all the training is completed here at Leading Edge Aviation.

Our uMAP students are currently studying for a degree in Commercial Aviation & Pilot Studies at their chosen university, and as part of the degree each student needs to complete their professional flight training at an Approved Training Organisation (ATO). Our uMAP course begins in the academy after completing the first year of your university degree. Students then begin ground school ATPL theoretical knowledge within the academy, and on completion, foundation flight training! Years 3-4 combine further university course studies with advanced flying back with your chosen flight school (varying schedules dependent on your university).

So why uMAP? There are huge benefits that accompany this course including the following:

  1. Become part of the ‘Leading Edge Family’! We are a friendly, good vibes only community, in a serious industry. Our students are at the heart of everything we do.
  2. We offer small class sizes, with a capacity of 16, taught by passionate Theoretical Knowledge Instructors, our ground school & wellbeing provision means that every student has the opportunity to succeed!
  3. We’ve created the ultimate professional courses that use the best of modern training methodology to take students from little or no flying experience to commercially qualified and flight deck ready. Students use interactive learning aids, virtual and mixed reality tech, and neuro training, to embed and refine their new knowledge and skills. At Leading Edge Aviation, we have designed a pioneering development programme that helps them progress into mature, accomplished pilots, ready for the challenges of airline flying.
  4. Students then fly our modern DA40 single-engine aircraft and progress onto our state-of-the-art DA42 multi-engine aircraft whilst utilising our up to date and fully approved DA42 simulator. Our Diamond aircraft are equipped with the Garmin G1000 all glass avionics suite, and two axis autopilot, giving you the perfect start to commercial flight training.

We asked a couple of our uMAP students to give an insight into the course, here’s what they had to say!

“I’m really enjoying the uMAP course so far- although the ground school modules are intense, they are interesting, and the instructors are very keen to help you succeed! I chose the uMAP course as I wanted the flexibility to fit my training around my university studies. I enjoy the structure of the course and feel the friendly, open atmosphere at Leading Edge is helping me learn in the best way possible.”

Adara

Joining uMAP was not an easy decision as it is a relatively new course at Leading Edge. However, the course lines up perfectly with the stage I was at with my flight training and university course [completed PPL and completion of university work requirements].

In addition, the course is structured in a manner that allows the students to interact with the instructors with no restrictions, allowing every little query to dismantled. As the academy likes to say, “there are no stupid questions”, the open environment this has created has extended onto the student; and has become a core component of our revision session.

“The social and educational environment is but only a factor that makes uMAP stand out. The payment structure eases the financial demands of the course into periodical structure, making it easier to accumulate the financial resources. If you’re considering UMAP I hope my little insight has been helpful.”

Tamie

“Loving the course so far, the small class size really helps with focus. I chose the uMAP course to fit the training around my degree and to help keep the cost down while staying in the UK for my training.”

Adam

If gaining a degree alongside your flight training course is something you are extremely interested in, we have multiple training options here at Leading Edge Aviation. In addition to our uMAP course, we offer the opportunity on our integrated LEAP course to gain a BSc degree in Air Transport Management with Airline Pilot Training.
