Top tips to become a pilot with our Leading Edge Aviation Skills Assessment
Find out more about the first step in how to become a pilot with our guide to passing your pilot Skills Assessment!

If you’re looking to take your first steps to become a pilot, booking our Skills Assessment is the perfect way to start.

While it’s natural to feel nervous, there are steps you can take to prepare for taking your Skills Assessment. Here’s a helpful guide to help you put your best foot forward and prepare for your assessment:

Get familiar with the computer-based testing (CBT)

The CBT is designed to assess a variety of skills, including complex control, deductive logical reasoning, and language skills, among others. To prepare for this, you can download the free Padpilot Maths and Physics for Pilots book and practice mental maths. You can also find details of CBT pilot aptitude tests online if you want to practice this type of test.

Plan ahead for the day

Our Skills Assessment Day is usually a full day, so it’s essential to plan ahead to reduce any stress. We recommend staying in the area the night before, making sure you have all the necessary documents and equipment. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the assessment venue.

Dress to impress

First impressions count, so it’s essential to present yourself well on the day. Dress as you would for an interview with your dream airline. Remember that you’re being assessed from the very first point of contact, even if you’re attending a virtual assessment.

Research interview techniques

Our competency-based interview will ask questions that help you demonstrate your motivation and the competencies needed to become a pilot. You can research interview techniques such as the STARR method and practice with friends and family can help you structure your answers, keep to the point, and communicate the evidence needed to answer a question well.

Brush up on your group exercise skills

Our group exercise is designed to test your team working skills, leadership skills, and how you communicate, among other qualities. To prepare for this, look at the information available online about group exercises and become aware of how you operate in team settings.

Use feedback to help you learn

At the end of the day, you’ll receive feedback on your performance, regardless of the outcome. Use this feedback as a learning opportunity to improve your skills and perform better in the future. Even if you’re unsuccessful, retesting at a later time may be suggested, and practical suggestions will be given.

In summary, preparing for your Leading Edge Aviation Skills Assessment requires good planning, practice, and a positive attitude. Follow these tips, and you’ll be well on your way to demonstrating your potential to become a successful commercial pilot. Good luck!
